BALTIMORE – The Coast Guard and the National Weather Service are urging Maryland and Washington, D.C., mariners and residents to begin planning and preparing for the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which started Tuesday.

For the 2010 hurricane season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting anywhere from 14 to 23 named storms, eight to 14 hurricanes and three to seven major hurricanes.

Tropical systems acquire a name when they reach tropical storm strength with sustained winds reaching 39 mph. They become hurricanes when winds reach 74 mph and become major hurricanes when winds increase to 111 mph.

As storms approach, the Coast Guard urges people to remember these guidelines:

- Stay informed: The public should monitor the progress and strength of the storm through newspapers, the Internet, and local television and radio stations. Boaters can monitor its progress on VHF channel 16. Small craft advisories and warnings are also available on VHF channel 16.

- Evacuate as necessary: Mandatory evacuation orders should be obeyed. Coast Guard personnel and other emergency responders may not be able to evacuate people in danger during a storm.

- Secure your boats and boating equipment: Owners of large boats are urged to move their vessels to inland marinas where they will be less likely to break free of their moorings or to be otherwise damaged. Trailerable boats should be pulled from the water and stored in a place that is not prone to flooding. Those mariners who leave their boats in the water are reminded to secure life rings, life jackets and fenders.

- Be cautious of hazardous materials: If you have hazardous materials on or near the water, you are responsible for any spills that may occur. Take the necessary precautions to secure these materials prior to any foul weather.

- Stay clear of beaches: Even the best swimmers can fall victim to the strong waves and rip currents caused by storms. Swimmers are urged to stay clear of beaches until local officials say the water is safe.

Mariners are reminded that drawbridges along the coast may deviate from normal operating procedures prior to a storm. They are generally authorized to remain closed up to eight hours prior to the approach of gale force winds of 32 mph or greater and whenever an evacuation is ordered. Because of the uncertainty of weather movements and related bridge closures, mariners should seek early passage through drawbridges well in advance of the arrival of gale-force winds.

For more information on hurricane preparedness, please visit the National Hurricane Center's Web page at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/.

OCRACOKE, N.C. - Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum conducted the annual British Cemetery Memorial Services in Buxton Thursday and in Ocracoke Friday.

The graveside ceremonies included a 21-gun salute to commemorate the loss of British and Canadian sailors from the H.M.S. Bedfordshire and the British merchant vessel San Delfino. The crewmen's bodies were recovered from the waters off Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island after the ships were torpedoed by German U-Boats in 1942.

The Bedfordshire and the San Delfino were working with the Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy to protect American shipping lanes, where U-boats had been sinking oil tankers important to the war effort.

Representatives from the Coast Guard, the British Royal Navy, the Canadian Navy, the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and local high school students participated in the event.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Coast Guard crews medically evacuated a 5-year-old boy and his parents Monday afternoon from an oil tanker approximately 250 nautical miles east of Bermuda.

The crew of the tank ship Axel Spirit called Rescue Coordination Center Bermuda Sunday and reported that a boy onboard was experiencing symptoms of appendicitis and needed help. After coordinating with Rescue Coordination Center Norfolk, Va., a Coast Guard flight surgeon determined that his symptoms were severe enough to require immediate medical attention.

The RCC Norfolk watchstanders looked for vessels participating in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System, or AMVER vessels, but there were no ships in the area that could provide the appropriate care. Due to the tanker's distance from land, an Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew had to be pre-staged in Bermuda Sunday in order to rescue the boy Monday when the ship was within range. One of Elizabeth City's HC-130J Hercules aircraft crews flew over the helicopter as they hoisted the people aboard to provide oversight and communications at such a far distance from land.

They were met by local EMS in Bermuda and the boy was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital there.
