Media Advisory: Coast Guard Cutter Maple patrols Oregon coast

ASTORIA, Ore. – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Maple, a 225-foot Juniper-Class buoy tender homeported in Sitka, Alaska, have spent the last three weeks along the West Coast repairing and replacing buoys vital to safe navigation and the flow of commerce.

Maple is now near the Oregon coast in the area normally patrolled by the Coast Guard Cutter Fir, homeported in Astoria, Ore.

The Fir is currently in the Gulf of Mexico and scheduled to return home in the next few months. Until then, the Maple’s crew is busy maintaining buoys near many of Oregon’s coastal communities.

“We are more than happy to backup our fellow buoy tenders wherever we are needed," said Lt. Cmdr. Dan Gray, commanding officer of the Maple. “These buoys serve the mariners, their livelihoods and allow the safe movement of goods across the nation. As global commerce grows the largest volume of goods still moves across the sea, which is why we need reliable buoys and beacons.”

In addition, Maple’s crew spent several days more than 600 miles offshore servicing scientific and weather data buoys with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Commissioned Oct. 19, 2001, Cutter Maple is operated by seven officers and a crew of 46 men and women. To find out more information about Coast Guard Cutter Maple visit, http://www.uscg.mil/d17/cgcmaple/.

Media Advisory: Coast Guard, local agencies to patrol for intoxicated boaters Friday-Sunday

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard, along with local law enforcement and other state agencies including the Clatsop County Sherriff's Department and Washington Fish & Wildlife will patrol the waters of the Oregon and Washington coasts and rivers for intoxicated boaters Friday, June 25 thru Sunday, June 27.

The effort is part of Operation Dry Water, an initiative to inform boaters of the dangers of boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol and to enforce laws concerning BUI and safe boating.

"Our aim is to allow people to enjoy the waterways as safely as possible," said Lt. j.g. Joe Miller, Recreational Boating Safety Officer at Coast Guard Air Station Astoria.

During 2009's operation, 2,442 marine law enforcement officers across 46 states and five territories made contact with 17,454 recreational vessels and issued 5,320 boating safety warnings, 283 BUI citations and 1,127 citations for other violations. Fourteen arrests were made in the state of Oregon. This year, all 56 states, trusts and territories are expected to participate, searching for boat operators whose blood alcohol concentration exceeds the national limit of .08 percent.

Alcohol can impair a boater’s judgment, balance, vision and reaction time. It can increase fatigue and susceptibility to the effects of cold-water immersion. Sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion – “stressors” common to the boating environment – intensify the side effects of alcohol, drugs, and some prescription medications. Authorities contend that this BUI crackdown is just as important to public safety as the enforcement of drunk driving laws.

Media Advisory: Coast Guard proposal to establish safety zone at Barview Jetty in Tillamook, Ore.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Coast Guard has issued a proposal to establish a safety zone at the Barview Jetty in Tillamook, Ore., from June 15 through Sept. 30.

The jetty has deteriorated to the point that the Army Corps of Engineers has contracted Kiewit Corporation to repair the jetty. The repairs will involve the use of a track-mounted 18,000 lb. crane with as much as 200-feet of boom. The crane will be used to move large granite boulders weighing approximately 20 to 50 tons each by lifting them up, circling them out over the waterway on either side of the north jetty, and placing them into the jetty.

Due to the inherent dangers associated with such operations, the Coast Guard is proposing the establishment of a safety zone covering all waters within 250-feet in every direction of the north jetty, named the Barview Jetty. The safety zone will help ensure the safety of work crews and the maritime public while the jetty is being repaired by prohibiting all persons and vessels from entering or remaining in the zone unless specifically authorized by the Captain of the Port or his designated representative.

The proposal can be viewed at http://www.regulations.gov by searching for Docket No. USCG-2010-0214. The Coast Guard is asking for all persons and entities this safety zone could effect to submit comments and concerns. Comments can be submitted four ways:
