Beginning at 10 a.m., boaters were able to receive a free vessel safety examination from auxiliarists who checked for compliance with all federal and state regulations and issued a highly visible sticker showing compliance.
Capt. Mark O'Malley, the commander of Coast Guard Sector Baltimore, along with Col. George F. Johnson, IV, superintendent of the NRP, spoke during the ceremony urging boaters to remember to be safe while on the water.
"Remember these five things: file a float plan, have reliable communication when on the water, never drink and boat, wear a life jacket and take a boater safety class," said O'Malley. "Doing these things can help save your life."
The Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin, a 175-foot buoy tender homeported in Baltimore, hosted tours on the ship, having more than 720 visitors who had the opportunity to learn about the Coast Guard as well as how to stay safe this boating season.
